Culture / Kalahandi Gears Up for Grand 'Chhatar Jatra'; Administration Issues Guidelines

Bhawanipatna, Sep 29: The Kalahandi district administration has stepped up preparations for the famous Chhatar Jatra, scheduled to be held on October 19, with a strong focus on security, crowd management and devotee welfare, officials said on Tuesday.

The annual festival, one of western Odisha's most celebrated religious events, attracts thousands of devotees from across the State and neighbouring regions. This year, district administration introduced a series of measures aimed at ensuring a safe, orderly and smooth conduct of the festival.

Chhatar procession schedule

As per the schedule, the sacred Chhatar of Goddess Manikeswari will commence its journey from Jenakhal at 5 AM on October 19. The administration has set a target of ensuring that the ceremonial procession reaches the temple premises by 11:30 AM.

Officials said detailed planning has been undertaken to regulate crowd movement and facilitate the timely completion of the procession.

Tight security measures

In a major security initiative, CCTV cameras will be installed throughout the procession route to maintain vigilance and enhance crowd monitoring. Authorities believe the surveillance system will help ensure public safety and maintain discipline during the festival.

The administration has also imposed a complete ban on carrying sharp weapons, deadly arms or any potentially dangerous objects during the procession. Devotees and participants have been urged to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to the guidelines issued for the event.

Focus on welfare and awareness

Authorities have reiterated that animal sacrifice, which is prohibited under law, will not be permitted during the festival. A large-scale awareness campaign will be conducted to educate devotees and the public about the legal provisions and encourage compliance.

To ensure convenience for pilgrims, arrangements will be made for drinking water, ambulance services and uninterrupted power supply during the event. As an additional measure to maintain order, liquor shops across the town will remain sealed during the festival period.

Hotels warned against overcharging

The administration has issued a stern warning to hotel owners and accommodation providers against overcharging visiting devotees. Officials stated that strict action would be taken against establishments found demanding exorbitant rates or cancelling confirmed bookings without valid reasons.

With extensive security, surveillance and public service arrangements in place, the administration is aiming to ensure that the iconic Chhatar Jatra is conducted peacefully while preserving its rich cultural and religious significance.
