Jharsuguda, Aug 25: Religious or caste-related issues are not new to India and something similar happened in Jharsuguda district when a kangaroo court punished a woman for reacting to her husband's oppression.

The incident took place in Routbahal village in Jammal Panchayat under Laikera Police Station limits. The incident unfolded when the son of the woman filed a complaint at the police station late Saturday night.

According to the complaint, Hema Kisan, 45, had an argument with her husband -- Mahendra Kisan -- August 9. Mahendra physically assaulted Hema in anger. During the altercation, Hema's hand touched Mahendra and this led their private matter to the Kangaroo Court -- 'the community court'.

The Kangaroo Court found Hema guilty and, it not only shaved her head as punishment, but also banished her from the caste.

The punishment didn't end there as the caste community ordered her to rejoin the caste by giving a mutton feast, a couple of chickens and pay a penalty of Rs 5,000.
