Notably, more than 50 passengers were onboard when the boat capsized in the Mahanadi near Sarada ghat under the Rengali police limits on Friday afternoon. While the fishermen managed to rescue over 42 passengers, others went missing. After a few minutes, one of the missing was rescued and he was later declared dead in the nearby medical.
Fire and ODRAF personnel and Scuba divers were pressed into service. Though they conducted a search operation, they could not trace any of the seven missing persons by evening. They resumed the search operation at 5 am today.

All deceased persons have been identified as natives of the Kharseni area of neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh.
A pall of gloom descended on the area following the tragic mishap.
