Bhubaneswar, Sept 4: A sacred atmosphere enveloped Odisha on Friday as devotees celebrated Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, with rituals, prayers, and festive celebrations. Temples across Bhubaneswar witnessed heavy footfall, with devotees thronging shrines from the early hours to participate in special ceremonies.

At the Ram Mandir (Ram Temple) in the city, elaborate arrangements were made for the occasion. The day began with Mangala Alati at 5:30 am, followed by the Singhar Besha at 6:30 am and Maha Alati at 7:00 am. General darshan continued until the afternoon, with devotees offering prayers and observing fasts. Children dressed as “Bal Gopal” became the centre of attraction, symbolising innocence and devotion, while devotees expressed their emotions through prayers.

The highlight of the celebrations will be the midnight ritual at 12:00 am, symbolising the divine descent of Lord Krishna. Anticipation has been building among devotees, who are expected to gather in large numbers for the sacred moment. The temple schedule also included Pahuda at 1:00 pm, Dwaraphita at 4:00 pm, and Gupt Shringara Besha at 6:30 pm, followed by darshan until 11:00 pm. After the Krishna Janma Niti, Manjari Bhog will be offered, and devotees will witness the Lord at the Jhulan Mandap.

Elsewhere in Bhubaneswar, ISKCON Temple witnessed heavy crowds since morning, with devotees chanting bhajans and offering prayers. At Jayadev Vihar’s Krishna Temple, Radha‑Krishna idols were adorned with fragrant flowers, drawing devotees for darshan and midnight rituals. Many devotees observed fasts, while others prayed for universal welfare and spiritual growth.

The festival of Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, is being celebrated across the country with religious fervour today. On the occasion, devotees observe fasts, perform ceremonies and visit temples. Sweets and foods associated with Krishna are prepared and offered to the deity. Devotional songs and chanting continue throughout the day and often late into the night. Temples and homes have been decorated with scenes depicting Krishna’s childhood in Gokul and Vrindavan, adding to the festive spirit.

For devotees, Janmashtami is not merely a festival but a reaffirmation of faith, joy, and community spirit, blending ritual precision with heartfelt devotion.
