Jajpur, Aug 1: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Friday apprehended Hemanta Kumar Terai, a Senior Revenue Assistant at Vyasanagar Tahasil Office in Jajpur district, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a complainant to fix up a date for the demarcation of his land, officials said.


According to the official sources, Terai was caught red-handed while receiving Rs 4,500 as the final installment of a Rs 5,000 bribe demanded from the complainant -- Lakshmidhar Sahu from Barundei area under Korei police limits.


Terai had earlier accepted Rs 500 and subsequently pressured the complainant to pay the remaining Rs 4,500 to expedite the process. The complainant, distressed by the demand, approached the Vigilance department and sought justice in this regard.

Based on the complaint, the Vigilance laid a trap and nabbed the accused official while he was accepting the bribe.


Vigilance officials said that further inquiry is underway in this connection to examine the depth of the malpractices and identify any links to a wider network within the Tahasil office.
