WhatsApp chats reveal financial disputes and marital discord.
Bhubaneswar, Sep 23: The Commissionerate Police has intensified its investigation into the shocking murder of Shubhamitra Sahoo, with emerging evidence suggesting a financial motive linked to life insurance.
Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh revealed that a heated argument lasting 45 minutes took place between Shubhamitra and her husband Deepak Rout inside their car prior to her death. The altercation reportedly escalated into physical violence.
Following the murder, Deepak allegedly made a phone call to his cousin, raising suspicions about his intent and state of mind. Police are now probing whether the murder was committed to claim insurance money, as Deepak had previously received a substantial payout — over ₹1 crore — from his first wife’s insurance policy. He had also taken out a similar policy in Shubhamitra’s name, listing himself as the nominee.

Police have also retrieved WhatsApp chat records between the couple, which reveal frequent disputes over financial matters. These chats indicate that their marital relationship was strained, adding weight to the theory of a premeditated crime.
