IMD Forecasts Twin Low-Pressure Systems for Odisha, Rain to Intensify

Key Points
IMD issues yellow alert for 11 districts today and 18 districts tomorrow due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Wind speeds of 30–40 km/h expected; two more low-pressure systems likely by August 24 and 27.
Authorities advise caution, especially in flood-prone and coastal areas.
Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall across several districts of Odisha, triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
The warning is in effect until August 24, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds expected in many regions.
On August 20, 11 districts — Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj — were placed under yellow alert. The IMD has forecast wind speeds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h during this period.
The alert expands on August 21 to include 18 districts, with warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The IMD also predicts the formation of two additional low-pressure systems — one around August 24 and another between August 27 and 28 — which may further intensify rainfall across the state. These systems are likely to impact interior and coastal Odisha, increasing the risk of waterlogging, landslides, and disruption of transport.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has urged fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions along the Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal coasts.
Local administrations have been directed to remain on high
alert and prepare for emergency response, especially in districts already
experiencing submergence of roads and bridges, as seen in Malkangiri and
Koraput.
