Illuminating Progress: How Adani Foundation’s Rural Solar Initiative Transformed Aryapalli’s ODRP Colony
Solar lights brighten Aryapalli’s ODRP Colony.

Key Points

  • Nearly 100 solar streetlights installed across Aryapalli’s ODRP Colony.
  • Safer access for fishermen, women, and elderly residents after dark.
  • Initiative part of Adani Gopalpur Port’s CSR outreach in peripheral villages.
  • Renewable energy ensures uninterrupted lighting, even during outages.

Berhampur, Feb 14: From shadowed evenings to illuminated streets, Aryapalli today reflects the growth and goodness of shared development. The Odisha Disaster Recovery Project (ODRP) Colony at Aryapalli Panchayat, a peripheral village of Adani Gopalpur Port is witnessing a visible transformation with the installation of solar streetlights by the Adani Foundation.

The ODRP Colony, developed as a rehabilitation site near Gopalpur Port to resettle families affected by cyclones, is home to nearly 800 households and around 3,000 residents. Strengthening safety and sustainability, nearly three kilometers of internal roads and pathways within the colony, along with two kilometers stretch leading to the fishing jetty, are now illuminated by approximately 100 modern solar streetlights.

Implemented as part of Adani Gopalpur Port’s CSR outreach in peripheral villages, the rural solar lighting initiative underscores the Group’s commitment to community-centric development. Beyond improving visibility, the project enhances livelihood security for local fishermen while promoting environmentally sustainable practices through clean energy solutions.

Most families in the colony depend on fishing and daily wage labour. Earlier, inadequate lighting posed significant challenges. Fishermen navigating towards the jetty before dawn struggled through dark stretches. Women faced difficulties fetching water after sunset, and elderly residents hesitated to step out at night. Poorly lit streets also heightened concerns around petty theft, anti-social activities and even snake encounters.

With the commissioning of solar-powered streetlights, the situation has changed considerably. As the lights operate on renewable energy, they continue to function seamlessly even during power outages ensuring uninterrupted illumination and reliability.

The transformation is clearly visible across the colony. Early morning fishing trips are now safer and more efficient. Elderly residents move comfortably between streets, and evenings have become more vibrant, with children playing outdoors and families engaging freely in community interactions.

Sriram, a Class VII student, shared, “We can now safely ride our bicycles to attend tuition classes in the evening and play games under the streetlights. These solar lights are environmentally friendly and are not affected by power cuts.”

Residents like Lingaraj Behera recall that earlier, darkness often led to incidents of bike and fuel theft. “Now the streets are fully lit and we feel secure. We are thankful to the Adani Foundation,” he said.

For women like B. Karamma, the change is deeply personal. Carrying a water jar along the illuminated pathway, she expressed, “Earlier, it was very difficult for women to fetch water at night due to darkness. Today, we feel safe. Gopalpur Port and the Adani Foundation have not only brought light to our streets but also brightened our daily lives.”

In Aryapalli’s ODRP Colony, the steady glow of solar lights now stands as a powerful symbol of sustainable development and inclusive growth. The initiative reflects how responsible infrastructure, when aligned with community needs, can foster safety, dignity, and long-term resilience across port peripheral villages.
