Odisha News / Illegal Pathology Labs And Clinics Mushroom Across Khordha District

Key Points
RTI reveals only 44 licensed labs in Khordha; hundreds operate illegally.
Labs conduct tests and treatments without oversight or accountability.
Bhubaneswar, Sep 20: Hundreds of unauthorized pathology labs and clinics are reportedly operating without government approval in Odisha’s Khordha district. From the capital city of Bhubaneswar to towns like Jatani, Chilika, Khordha, and Begunia, these unlicensed facilities have proliferated unchecked, raising serious concerns about public health and regulatory oversight, informed an RTI activist on Saturday.
RTI Reveals Alarming Data
According to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, only 44 private pathology labs in Khordha district have valid licenses. This means that the vast majority of labs and clinics are functioning illegally, conducting medical tests, issuing reports, and even offering treatment without any formal authorization or accountability.
“These labs are operating freely, often in narrow lanes and urban pockets, conducting tests and prescribing treatments without qualified oversight,” said Hrudananda Kodamasingh, an RTI activist. “If any medical mishap occurs, there is no one to hold responsible.”
Ajit Kumar Pattnaik, Chairman of the Odisha Advocates’ Council, echoed the concern, stating that the health sector under the previous BJD government had become a playground for unregulated practices. He emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures.
Political Pressure and Administrative Response
The BJP has demanded strict action against these illegal establishments, accusing the previous administration of allowing such operations to flourish. Meanwhile, the Chief District Medical Officer has warned that any lab or clinic failing to obtain proper licensing will face swift action.
The issue has sparked widespread debate over the state’s healthcare governance, with citizens and activists calling for tighter monitoring and enforcement. The presence of unauthorized medical facilities not only undermines public trust but also poses a direct threat to patient safety.
