H&UD Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra Opens Up On Metro Project In Odisha

Key Points

The initial Metro Project had been planned from the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), Bhubaneswar to Trisulia

The H&UD Minister revealed that a three-lane road will be constructed on Nandankanan Road, which will also include metro operations

Bhubaneswar, Mar 18: Odisha Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, Tuesday, has opened up on the necessity of Metro Project in the state.

Responding to a question, the H&UD Minister said that the Odisha Government is considering the extension of previously-planned metro project. “The former government had planned the metro up to Trisulia,” stated Dr Mahapatra, questioning the plan’s feasibility.

Notably, the initial Metro Project had been planned from the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), Bhubaneswar to Trisulia. “There is a necessity for a metro project in the state. However, questions have been raised over its feasibility,” said the H&UD Minister.

“People are questioning the usefulness of extending it only up to Trisulia and emphasising the need for it to connect to Cuttack and other locations,” he explained.

Dr Mahapatra said that a high-level committee, including technical experts, has been formed and has also conducted surveys. “This project will be implemented soon. The committee is analysing which routes would make the project more effective,” asserted the H&UD Minister.

According to Dr Mahapatra, the committee is deliberating on the matter, and the project's scope will be expanded accordingly. Ruling out the possibility of the cancellation of the Metro Project, he said that the government will focus on “fulfilling the needs of the people”.

Additionally, the H&UD Minister revealed that a three-lane road will be constructed on Nandankanan Road, which will also include metro operations.

Benefits of a Metro Project

A metro project can bring transformative benefits to both local transportation and the economy. Once the project is completed, it will help in the development of Odisha in a big way. It will definitely play a big role in the Odisha Government’s mission of ‘Bikashita Odisha’ in ‘Vision 2036’.

Reduction In Traffic Congestion: By providing a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel, metro systems can significantly decrease the number of vehicles on the road.

Improvement In Connectivity: Metros will connect key areas like residential zones, business districts, and tourist spots, making commuting seamless for travellers.

Reliability & Punctuality: Unlike buses or cars, metros operate on fixed schedules and are not affected by traffic, ensuring a timely travel.

Eco-Friendly Option: A metro system reduces dependency on cars and buses, thereby cutting down on air and noise pollution.

Comfortable Commuting: Modern metro systems offer air-conditioned and comfortable travel options, especially beneficial in regions with extreme weather.

Economic Growth

Boost to Local Businesses: With better access, foot traffic to nearby shops, malls, and restaurants increases, playing fuel to local commerce.

Job Creation: Metro projects create a range of jobs — from construction work during the building phase to operational roles once the system is running.

Increased Property Values: Areas near metro stations often see a rise in property values, benefiting local residents and investors.

Urban Development: Metros encourage planned city expansion and better land use, often leading to modern infrastructure around stations.

Enhanced Productivity: Faster commutes mean people spend less time traveling and more time at work or with their families.
