Balasore, Feb 16: A hotel owner was allegedly murdered at his establishment along National Highway 16 under Simulia police station limits in Balasore district, our source from the ground informed Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Gajendra Panda, owner of Hotel Jay Maa Durga.
According to preliminary information, Panda was sleeping inside the hotel when unidentified miscreants allegedly killed him and fled the spot, reportedly taking away a scooter.
The incident came to light on Monday morning when the hotel’s cook, Ramesh, noticed Panda lying unresponsive and alerted local residents. Simulia police were informed and reached the scene to begin an investigation.
The motive behind the murder remains unclear. Police said a probe is underway.
In a separate incident, the body of an unidentified young man was recovered near the Nesa Nala bridge under Bahalda police station limits in Mayurbhanj district, the source said.
Locals spotted the body and informed police. Officers reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.

A case has been registered and further investigation is in progress. The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of filing this report.

Rape cases have increased by 8 per cent, while cases of murder are down by 7.6 per cent.
A total of 2,14,113 cognisable cases, including 1,258 murders, 356 dacoities, 2,582 robberies, 6,408 burglaries, 17,805 thefts, 6,307 swindlings, 1,471 rioting, 3,054 rape, 12,375 motor vehicle accidents and 1,62,497 other miscellaneous cases were reported during 2024.
