Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: President Droupadi Murmu is set to script history on Thursday by becoming the first President of India to address the Odisha Legislative Assembly. The event holds special significance as it marks a symbolic homecoming for Murmu, who began her political career as a legislator in the very same House more than two decades ago.
A Return to Roots
President Murmu, twice elected from the Rairangpur Assembly Constituency in 2000 and 2004, served as Minister of State in the BJD-BJP coalition government. She held portfolios in Commerce and Transport, and later Fisheries and Animal Resources Development.
President Murmu will visit Room Number 11, the chamber where she worked during her tenure as a legislator. The chamber has been renovated ahead of her arrival.

✨The President is scheduled to speak from 4 pm to 5 pm on the
first day of the winter session. Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy described the
moment as “truly historic,” noting that all 147 members are eager to hear her
address. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, MPs, and eminent personalities will
also be present.

Security and Preparations
Elaborate arrangements have been made in Bhubaneswar, with a four-tier security cover replacing the usual three-tier system. The Odisha government has ensured heightened vigilance in and around the Assembly premises.
Legacy and Recognition
President Murmu’s political career in Odisha was marked by distinction. In 2007, she received the Nilkanth Award for Best MLA of the Odisha Assembly. Her return as the President of India underscores her enduring bond with the state and its people.
The winter session of the Assembly will continue until December 31, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi set to present the supplementary budget on November 28.
