Odisha News / Hirakud Reservoir Level Rises as Chhattisgarh Releases Water into Mahanadi

Key Points
Bhubaneswar, July 4: The water level at Hirakud reservoir in Odisha has begun to rise after Chhattisgarh released water from the Kalma Barrage into the Mahanadi river system ahead of the monsoon. Officials said that 17 gates of the barrage were opened two days ago, allowing water to flow downstream into Odisha.
The inflow has revived the Mahanadi, which had dried up during the summer months. Current readings show the reservoir level touching 601.56 feet, with an inflow of 51,335 cusecs. The early release is expected to bolster Odisha’s preparedness for the monsoon season, ensuring adequate storage before heavy rains arrive.
The Kalma Barrage release marks the first major discharge of water into the Mahanadi this season. Officials said the inflow will improve irrigation prospects and drinking water availability in downstream districts. At the same time, authorities are monitoring reservoir levels closely to balance storage and flood control.

✨The Mahanadi river system has often been at the centre of disputes between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over water sharing and barrage operations. While the current release has eased concerns in Odisha, coordinated management of river flows during the monsoon remains critical to avoid sudden flooding and ensure equitable use.
With the southwest monsoon expected to intensify in the coming days, the inflow from Kalma Barrage is likely to provide a buffer for Hirakud reservoir, which plays a vital role in flood management across Odisha.
