Sambalpur, July 2: In a bold move to transform Odisha’s tourism landscape, the iconic Hirakud Reservoir in Sambalpur is poised to become a world-class destination for water-based adventure sports, officials said on Wednesday.

Inspired by global hotspots like Goa and Dubai, the state government, in collaboration with national water sports authorities, is laying the groundwork to introduce scuba diving, parasailing, and paragliding in the vast blue expanse of Hirakud.

A three-member team from the National Water Sports Institute recently conducted a feasibility study at the reservoir. The team reportedly assessed the potential for implementing various water sports across different seasons. Over the next year, the team will continue its seasonal evaluations, culminating in a comprehensive report that will determine which activities are best suited for the region’s unique aquatic environment.

District Collector Siddeshwar Baliram Bondar confirmed that this initiative marks the first step in a broader master plan to elevate Hirakud into a global tourism hub. The plan also includes the development of nearby attractions like Debrigarh and Barapahad, ensuring a holistic tourism experience.

Earlier this year, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan attended a workshop at the Hirakud Eco Retreat, where he emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism development. Senior officials from the state tourism department participated in discussions focused on integrating eco-tourism with modern infrastructure.

This initiative is part of a larger vision to position Odisha as a premier destination for both domestic and international tourists. With the government’s renewed focus on tourism post-political transition, Hirakud is expected to emerge as a vibrant center for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.
