Sambalpur, Sep 6: In response to heavy inflow from upstream catchment areas, authorities at Hirakud Dam have opened 24 spillway gates to release excess water into the Mahanadi River.
The surge in water discharge has led to a significant rise in the Mahanadi’s flow, causing flooding in low-lying areas.
One of the worst-hit regions is the Malati Gunterpur bridge on the Sambalpur–Sonepur State Highway, where water levels have risen to 2 to 3 feet above the bridge surface.

As a result, vehicular movement has been completely halted, and commuters are being diverted through alternative routes.
