Hirakud Dam Gates to Open Today for First Floodwater Release of 2026
As of 6 AM, the water level at Hirakud stood at 614.65 feet, with an inflow of approximately 1.64 lakh cusecs per second.

Key Points

Hirakud Dam gates open today for first floodwater release of 2026 after rising inflows. Authorities declare No-Flying Zone, issue alerts, and assure no flood threat in downstream Mahanadi districts.

Sambalpur, Jul 9: The Hirakud Dam authorities will open the gates today to release the season’s first floodwater, following a traditional puja ceremony at 11 AM. The decision comes as water levels in the reservoir continue to rise due to heavy inflows from upstream regions.

As of 6 AM, the water level at Hirakud stood at 614.65 feet, with an inflow of approximately 1.64 lakh cusecs per second. The first gate to be opened will be Gate No. 7 on the left side, marking the beginning of controlled water discharge. Officials said the number of gates to be opened will depend on the evolving situation.

The rising inflow is attributed to heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh, where 46 gates of the Kalma Barrage have already been opened, channelling additional water into the Hirakud reservoir. Authorities have assured that despite the release, there is no immediate threat of flooding in downstream districts along the Mahanadi River.

Ahead of the gate opening, sirens and public announcements have been issued in low-lying areas to alert residents. Fishermen and the general public have been strictly prohibited from entering the river during this period. District administrations along the Mahanadi have been instructed to remain vigilant and enforce safety measures.

In a significant move, the Sambalpur District Collector and Magistrate have declared the Hirakud main dam and surrounding areas a “No-Flying Zone.”

The order bans drones, microlight aircraft, and any other aerial devices without prior permission, citing security concerns and the need to safeguard the dam’s infrastructure. Media representatives and the public have been urged to cooperate fully with these restrictions.

Dam authorities confirmed that all preparations have been completed for the ceremonial opening. While the release of floodwater is a routine annual exercise, officials emphasized that strict monitoring will continue to ensure safety downstream.
