Hirakud Dam Closes Four Gates as Water Level Drops

Key Points
Four gates closed at Hirakud Dam due to falling water levels; eight gates remain open.
Current inflow: 84,973 cusecs; outflow: 1,57,194 cusecs. Situation under control; authorities monitoring for further rainfall impact.
Sambalpur, Jul 31: Authorities at Hirakud Dam have closed four sluice gates following a gradual decrease in the reservoir’s water level. As of 3 pm on Thursday, the water level stands at 610.17 feet, prompting a phased reduction in water discharge.
Currently, eight gates remain open to release excess water, with an inflow of 84,973 cusecs and an outflow of 1,57,194 cusecs per second. The decision to close gates is part of a controlled response to changing rainfall patterns in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi basin.
Officials from the Water Resources Department confirmed that the situation is under control and being closely monitored. The dam had previously opened up to 20 gates to manage heavy inflow caused by persistent monsoon rains. However, with rainfall subsiding, the water level has begun to recede, allowing for gate closures to prevent unnecessary downstream flooding.

The Hirakud Dam plays a critical role in Odisha’s flood management strategy. The dam continues to discharge water through five gates on the left spillway and three on the right. Authorities are expected to adjust gate operations based on further rainfall and inflow data.
