Puri, July 1: The sacred city of Puri is set to witness the Hera Panchami ritual today, a deeply symbolic and emotionally charged event that unfolds on the fifth day of the Rath Yatra festival.
As per tradition, Goddess Lakshmi will make a ceremonial visit to the Gundicha Temple, where Lord Jagannath currently resides at the Adapa Mandap, to express her displeasure at being left behind during the annual journey.
In a dramatic reenactment of divine emotion, the Goddess—accompanied by servitors and a grand procession—will attempt to meet Lord Jagannath. Upon being denied an audience, she will symbolically break a part of the Nandighosa chariot, representing her anger and longing. This act is steeped in spiritual meaning, portraying the divine leela between the Lord and His consort.
After the ritual, Goddess Lakshmi will return to the Shree Mandir through a separate path, maintaining the sanctity and secrecy of the tradition.
The event draws thousands of devotees and is considered one of the most emotionally resonant moments of the Rath Yatra celebrations.
The Hera Panchami ritual not only showcases the cultural richness of Jagannath tradition but also highlights the unique spiritual bond between the deities, blending devotion, mythology, and symbolism into a spectacle of divine love and longing.
