Bhubaneswar, Jun 18: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours due to a well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
Several other districts, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Angul, and Balasore, are under orange warning, while yellow alerts have been issued for parts of western and coastal Odisha.
In the past 24 hours, most regions of the state have recorded light to moderate rainfall, with isolated areas experiencing heavy downpours.
The IMD forecasts that rainfall will persist for the next 4–5 days, particularly in northern Odisha, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h.
The red alert signifies a high risk of flooding, waterlogging, and disruption to transport and essential services. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Fishermen have been strictly warned not to venture into the Bay of Bengal during this period due to rough sea conditions.
Districts such as Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Bhadrak are also expected to receive intermittent rainfall. While the weather poses challenges for urban infrastructure, it is considered favourable for agriculture, especially for paddy cultivation.
Emergency response teams have been placed on high alert, and district administrations are monitoring the situation closely. The IMD has urged the public to stay updated with official advisories and take necessary precautions.
