Heavy Rain Alert: Southern Odisha Braces for Downpour

Bhubaneswar, Aug 14: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings for Odisha as a low-pressure system over the central Bay of Bengal intensifies.

 

The system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state over the next five days, with southern districts likely to be most affected.

 

Rayagada and Gajapati districts have been placed under an orange warning for the next 24 hours, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Cuttack, and Jajpur districts are under yellow warning for heavy showers.

The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in 23 districts on the following day, with yellow warnings specifically issued for Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and Gajapati. The rainfall activity is expected to persist until August 19, with the possibility of flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

 

In addition to rainfall, the IMD has warned of rough sea conditions due to strong winds and cloudy skies. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea between August 13 and 15, as the Bay of Bengal is expected to remain turbulent.
