Heatwave Response Plan: Odisha Health Department Rolls Out Emergency Measures

Key Points
Healthcare infrastructure strengthened as Odisha braces for rising temperatures and heat-related illnesses.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 29: With rising temperatures and the impending heatwave season, Odisha's Health and Family Welfare Department has launched an extensive preparedness plan to safeguard public health and minimize the effects of extreme heat.
Under the leadership of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, a review meeting was held, chaired by Dr Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health, to assess critical healthcare infrastructure and emergency response strategies.
The key measures being implemented include:
1. Stockpiling essential medical supplies like intravenous fluids (IV), oral rehydration salts (ORS), medicines, and cooling equipment in hospitals.
2. Ensuring air-conditioned emergency wards and power backup systems in all healthcare centers to maintain functionality during extreme weather.
3. Expanding heatwave-related training programs for healthcare personnel, reaching grassroots-level health workers for effective local response.
4. Allocating extra resources for vulnerable populations, particularly those in mining regions and other high-risk areas.
5. Launching a statewide awareness campaign through information, education, and communication (IEC) initiatives to educate the public on preventive measures and early warning signs of heatstroke.
Additionally, district health administrations have been directed to ensure adequate bed availability and emergency medical services for patients affected by heat-related illnesses.
Recognising past challenges, Dr Mishra emphasised the importance of proactive implementation, ensuring all preparedness measures are in place ahead of peak summer.
He stated, “With a collective effort involving healthcare workers, district officials, and the general public, we aim to provide immediate medical assistance, raise awareness, and reduce the adverse effects of extreme heat.”
Officials from various health departments, including heat-related illness specialists, surveillance officers, and district medical administrators, participated in the crucial strategy session.
