Sambalpur, Apr 13: A hardcore criminal was injured in a police encounter at Sargidepur in Sambalpur district this morning.

The injured criminal, Sitaram Sarangi, has been arrested and hospitalized.

More than 25 cases have been registered against Sarangi at different police stations in the Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts.

According to the information, the police went to arrest Sitaram in the morning. But Sitaram fired at them and tried to escape arrest. Police retaliated, firing at him. In the encounter, Sarangi received bullet injuries in his left leg.

Police rushed him to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR).

Police seized a 7.65 mm country-made pistol, two live cartridges, a motorcycle without a number plate, and Rs 1 lakh in cash from his possession. A forensic team has reached the spot and an investigation is underway.
