Bhubaneswar, Sep 22: BJP Odisha president Manmohan Samal on Monday welcomed the rollout of the Centre’s “Next Generation GST Reform,” calling it a historic economic milestone and a festive gift for the people of India.
Addressing a press conference at the state party office here, Samal expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the reforms would significantly ease the financial burden on poor and middle-class families.
GST 2.0: A Step Toward Viksit Bharat
Samal emphasized that the reforms, effective from September 22, mark a major shift in India’s tax structure, aimed at empowering economically vulnerable sections. “This is a double gift from the double-engine government—GST exemptions and income tax relief within a year,” he said.
He noted that nearly 99% of goods under the 12% GST slab have been reduced to 5%, while 90% of items in the 28% category now fall under the 18% slab. Essential commodities, agricultural equipment, and life-saving medicines are either taxed minimally or fully exempted, making them more accessible to the masses.

Sectoral Gains for Odisha
Samal highlighted that Odisha stands to benefit immensely from the reforms, particularly in agriculture, handloom, tourism, and coal. The reduction of GST on textiles from 18% to 5% will support lakhs of weavers, while the removal of cess on coal is expected to boost state revenue.
The BJP leader added that the reforms will generate new employment opportunities for Odisha’s youth and strengthen domestic demand, aligning with the vision of a developed India by 2047.
