Cuttack, Aug 31: In a heartwarming moment during the 125th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio program, Odisha’s canoeing athlete Rashmita Sahu was personally congratulated for her remarkable achievements at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival held in Srinagar’s Dal Lake.

 

Rashmita, a native of Nabagraha Sahi in Choudwar, Cuttack, won two gold medals in the 200m singles and 500m doubles canoeing events. Her journey from a humble background to national recognition moved the Prime Minister, who praised her resilience and determination.

 

Born into a financially struggling family, Rashmita faced immense personal challenges. Her mother left the family during her childhood, and her father became physically disabled following a road accident. Despite these hardships, Rashmita began her training at the SAI (Sports Authority of India) facility in Jagatpur — in the Mahanadi River. Rashmita pursued her passion for canoeing with the support of her father and coach.

 

During the radio interaction, PM Modi asked Rashmita about her early struggles and encouraged her to continue her sporting journey despite obstacles. He lauded her for not giving up and for bringing pride to her family, her community, and the state of Odisha.

Rashmita’s story has inspired many, especially young girls from underprivileged backgrounds. Her success has brought immense joy to her family and local residents, who now celebrate her as a symbol of perseverance and hope.

 

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who listened to the 125th episode of Prime Minister’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program along with local residents at Shishu Vihar in Chandrasekharpur, stated that, with the support of the Odisha Kayaking and Canoeing Association, talented sportspersons from Odisha are receiving high-quality training at the SAI (Sports Authority of India) facility in Jagatpur. Rashmita has also undergone canoeing training at Jagatpur.

 

It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Majhi had served as the President of the Odisha Kayaking and Canoeing Association for many years. Currently, he holds the position of Chief Patron of the organization.

 

As India continues to promote sports through initiatives like Khelo India, Rashmita’s achievements stand as a testament to the power of grit and grassroots talent.
