From Dhenkanal To London: Odisha’s Green Papaya Makes Global Headlines

Key Points
Empowered tribal women in Odisha are leading a green papaya revolution, boosting exports and redefining self-reliance.
Dhenkanal, Mar 28: Green Papaya, cultivated in Dhenkanal district, has made waves in international markets, with exports reaching destinations like London and Ireland.
Spearheading this agricultural revolution are the women of Majhisahi, a tribal hamlet under Saptasajya Panchayat, who are setting examples of self-reliance and resilience.
Their dedication has transformed their village into a symbol of empowerment under the "Make in Odisha" initiative. Through organic farming practices, their produce is celebrated for its exceptional taste and long shelf life, making it a sought-after product globally.
Companies like Madan Mohan Agro Producer and Saptasajya Agro have been instrumental in processing and exporting this native fruit to international markets.
With support from APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) and the Government of India, 700 quintals were sent to Ireland, and one ton reached London.
Dhenkanal Horticulture Deputy Director Geetashree Padhi remarked, “Health-conscious foreign consumers drive the demand for green papaya, and the tribal women are the real force behind this success story.”
Farmers like Dumuni Tudu, Lakshmi Hembram, and Binodini Nayak have seen significant improvements in their livelihoods. Each green papaya tree yields 40-50 kg of fruits, sold at ₹17 per kg, contributing to their financial independence. This remarkable initiative highlights the transformative impact of empowering women in agriculture.
