Fresh Low-Pressure System to Bring Heavy Rainfall Across Odisha

Key Points

IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha from August 18.

Orange and yellow warnings issued for over 20 districts.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 18, triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha for five consecutive days.

The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre has issued yellow and orange warnings for multiple districts, cautioning residents about thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph. Coastal and southern districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur are expected to be the worst affected, with orange warnings in place for August 18–19.

The current low-pressure system that had developed over south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh has moved into south Chhattisgarh and is expected to weaken gradually. However, the new system is likely to intensify and bring widespread rainfall, especially in western, coastal, and southern Odisha.
