Key Points
IMD predicts fresh low pressure over Bay of Bengal from October 9.
Yellow warning issued for 20 Odisha districts due to rainfall threat.
Odisha has seen 16 low pressure systems since monsoon onset in May.
Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a fresh low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal on October 9, marking the 17th such system since the onset of the monsoon in Odisha on May 28 this year, officials said on Saturday.
The state continues to witness back-to-back weather disturbances, with experts noting no significant weakening in their impact.
Persistent Rainfall Likely Across Odisha
According to IMD’s latest bulletin, a cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over the northern Bay of Bengal, which may evolve into a low pressure system. This is likely to trigger rainfall across Odisha starting October 10.
Meanwhile, the weathermen have already issued a yellow warning for 20 districts, anticipating thunderstorms and moderate to heavy showers over the next 24 hours.
Districts under alert include Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda. Cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall are expected to persist for at least three days.

Monsoon Performance and Future Outlook
Briefing the media, Weather scientist Dr. Rajashree said that the deep depression currently over the central Bay of Bengal may intensify briefly before weakening. While southern Odisha is likely to receive scattered rainfall, the overall intensity is expected to be moderate.
Another cyclonic circulation is projected to form on October 7, though it may not significantly impact Odisha. However, long-range models suggest a stronger low pressure system around October 15, which could bring heavy rainfall across the state.
In the past 24 hours, Khordha district recorded the highest rainfall at 98.0 mm, contributing to Odisha’s overall normal monsoon performance this year.
