Weather Alert / Fresh Cyclone Concern for Odisha as Low-Pressure Area Brews Over Bay of Bengal

Key Points
Bhubaneswar, Oct 20: Fresh concerns over cyclonic activity have emerged in Odisha as a potential low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal later this week, according to weather experts and forecasts issued by meteorological agencies.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and adjoining regions has moved into the north Andaman Sea. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23.
System Under Watch
While the system is still in its formative stage, global weather models, including the GFS and ECMWF, suggest the low-pressure area could intensify further into a depression or a deeper weather system as it moves west-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal.

Impact Yet Unclear
Regional Meteorological Centre scientist Sanjib Dwibedi said the low-pressure area is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days, but its subsequent movement and strength will become clearer only after the system forms.
Weather expert Surendranath Pashupalak has projected that
the system may develop between October 23 and 25 and could intensify into a
depression or deep depression between October 27 and 29. According to his
assessment, it may move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast and possibly influence
southern Odisha.
