Four Killed In Two Separate Accidents In Odisha, Locals Stage Road Blockades

Rayagada/Paradip, Feb 17: In two separate road accidents in Odisha, four people, including a minor, lost their lives, leading to tension and road blockades by locals, sources said Tuesday.

In the first incident, the mishap took place late Monday night near Nataraj Petrol Pump at Musuripadar Chhak under Tikiri police station area in the Kashipur block of Rayagada district when a bike crashed into a tanker that was illegally parked on the roadside, our source from the ground informed.

The deceased were identified as Narendra Jhodia (25), son of Gobinda Jhodia; son of Muna Jhodia; Umakant Jhodia (14), son of Jaga Jhodia; Tunu Jhodia (23). All three were residents of Mahatput village under Tikiri police station limits.

They were travelling from Tikiri towards Gorakhpur for some work when their bike hit the stationary tanker. After the collision, they were found lying on the road in a critically injured condition. Tikiri police rescued them and shifted them by ambulance to Utkal Hospital at Oshapada. Doctors declared one person dead there, while the other two were referred to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital.

Tunu Jhodia died on the way to Rayagada, and Umakant Jhodia died while undergoing treatment. Among the deceased, Umakant was a minor. Following the incident, angry locals blocked the road demanding compensation. Police reached the spot and were seen trying to pacify the protestors.

In another accident on the Cuttack-Paradip road, a fatal accident took place near Pankapal under the Kujang police station area in Jagatsinghpur district. A cyclist lost his life after being run over by multiple trucks, our source from the ground said.

The deceased was identified as Uttam Parida from Badapal village in Jagatsinghpur district. He was working as a watchman in a private college. The accident took place in the morning while he was returning home after completing his duty. While he was cycling near Pankapal, multiple trucks ran over him from behind, leading to his death on the spot.

After the incident, local people kept the body on the road and blocked the Cuttack-Paradip route for a long time. Afterwards, the tehsildar and IIC of Kujang police station reached the spot and held discussions with the protestors. After prolonged talks, the road blockade was finally lifted.
