Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Korei MLA Sanchita Mohanty passed away at her residence in Bhubaneswar on Friday after a prolonged illness, a source said. She had been undergoing treatment for several months.

Mohanty, 67, had attended the birthday party of her grandson Thursday night and collapsed at about 7:40 am Friday, her son Satyakam Mohanty said.

Mohanty’s death marks the end of a significant political chapter in Jajpur district, where she remained an influential BJP figure for decades. She represented the Korei Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2009 and was known for her strong organisational skills and close engagement with the electorate.

Within the Jajpur unit of the BJP, Mohanty was regarded as one of the party’s key grassroots leaders and played an important role in strengthening the organisation during its formative years in the district. Even after her term as an MLA ended, she continued to remain actively associated with party activities and was accessible to party workers and local leaders.
