Kandhamal, Aug 25: Following the demise of former Baliguda MLA and senior BJP leader Karendra Majhi, a wave of grief swept across Odisha’s political landscape. Majhi passed away late Sunday night while undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications. He had been elected twice to the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Baliguda constituency in 2004 and 2009 on a BJP ticket. His demise marks a significant loss for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has lost one of its dedicated tribal leaders.
A prominent tribal leader from the Kutia Kandha community, Majhi was the first graduate and postgraduate from his community. Born on January 4, 1973, in Fedam Panchayat under Tumudibandh block, he began his political journey as student union president at Phulbani College in 1993.
His death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from across the political spectrum. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described the loss as “irreparable,” offering prayers for the departed soul.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan remembered Majhi’s developmental work and called him a “simple and compassionate leader” dedicated to tribal welfare.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan noted Karendra’s contributions to tribal upliftment and remembered him as a tireless advocate for his people.
Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, Urban Development Minister Krushnachandra Mahapatra, Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, and Panchayati Raj Minister Ravi Nayak were among those who offered floral tributes and observed a moment of silence.
A ceremonial Guard of Honour was presented at the Assembly premises before Majhi’s body was taken to the BJP state headquarters. Minister Ravi Nayak expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul, describing Majhi’s passing as a profound loss to the tribal and political community.
Majhi’s passing marks the end of an era in Kandhamal’s tribal leadership, leaving behind a legacy of service, resilience, and grassroots connection.
