Flood Crisis Deepens In Odisha As Rivers Breach Danger Mark

Bhubaneswar, Jul 27: Northern Odisha is once again grappling with a flood-like situation as water levels in major rivers — Subarnarekha, Baitarani, Budhabalanga, and Jalaka — continue to rise alarmingly.
In Basta block alone, 25 villages have been inundated, leaving thousands stranded and agricultural lands submerged.
In Rasgovindpur of Mayurbhanj district, the embankment of the Badampur river has breached, flooding over 2,000 hectares of farmland. The Odisha government has issued alerts to district collectors of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak, urging them to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
At Hirakud reservoir, water inflow has surged due to heavy rainfall in upper catchment areas. As of 6 am on Sunday, the water level stood at 613.73 feet. Twenty gates have been opened to release excess water, with an inflow of 5.42 lakh cusecs and an outflow of 3.41 lakh cusecs.

Continuous rainfall in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur (44.1 mm) and Mahasamund (51 mm) districts has contributed to the rising water levels in the Mahanadi and Ib rivers, further increasing pressure on Hirakud.
Meanwhile, the Baitarani river has crossed the danger mark due to intense rainfall upstream. At Bhandaripokhari-Akhuapada, the river is flowing at 18.72 meters, surpassing the warning level of 18.33 meters, triggering flood alerts in the region.
