Balasore, Jun 21: A major breach at the Khaljhuri sluice gate in Bhograi block has triggered panic among residents as floodwaters from the Subarnarekha River gush through three damaged gates, threatening to inundate 18 low-lying panchayats.
The breach, located near Uluda panchayat, has caused a surge of water into surrounding villages. Locals report that the sluice gate, constructed during the British era, has weakened over time and finally gave way under pressure from the season’s first floodwaters. Villagers are now living in fear of complete isolation if the gate collapses entirely.
According to Chandra Shekhar Padhy, Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, the Subarnarekha River was flowing at 11.4 meters at Rajghat — well above the danger mark of 10.36 meters — before slightly receding to 11.05 meters.
Heavy rainfall in the river’s upper catchment has worsened the situation, leading to water entering several parts of Bhograi, Basta, and Baliapal blocks.
Despite the growing threat, locals allege that the Irrigation Department has yet to take urgent repair measures, raising concerns that a full collapse of the sluice gate could submerge vast areas.
The district administration has been placed on high alert, and coordination efforts are underway to monitor the situation and prepare for emergency response.
