Key Points
Odisha plans to strengthen its judicial system with specialized Women’s Courts and rural justice initiatives.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 23: In a landmark move to ensure justice for women, Odisha’s Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, on Wednesday, announced the state government’s plans to establish five independent Fast-Track Women’s Courts in the state.
The government has initiated discussions with the High Court, and the process of setting up these courts is underway.
These Fast-Track Women’s Courts aim to expedite trials in cases related to crimes against women, ensuring swift justice and harsher penalties for offenders. Initially, five courts will be established, with plans to expand their number further. This initiative reflects the government’s firm stance on tackling gender-based violence and improving the conviction rate.
The Odisha government also plans to set up courts in all 314 blocks, along with Gram Nyayalayas (village courts), to make the justice system more accessible to rural areas. These proposals are part of a larger strategy to strengthen judicial infrastructure and promote timely justice for all.
Odisha Law Minister Harichandan emphasized that these measures will not only ensure justice but also send a strong message against crimes targeting women. "The establishment of Women’s Courts is a significant step towards fostering a safer and more equitable society," he stated.
This initiative is seen as a progressive step that reinforces Odisha’s commitment to legal reforms and societal well-being.
