Farmers In Odisha Struggle As Pest Infestation Hits Paddy Crops

Key Points

Farmers in Boudh and Balangir report severe pest damage to paddy crops.

Lack of field visits and guidance from Agriculture Department sparks frustration.

Economic stress rises as crop losses threaten livelihoods and loan repayments.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 30: Farmers in Odisha’s Boudh and Balangir districts are facing severe crop damage due to widespread pest infestations in paddy fields during the harvest season. The situation has triggered panic among cultivators, who say they are receiving little to no support or guidance from the Agriculture Department.

Pest Outbreak in Boudh

In the Kantamal region of Boudh district, farmers faced extensive damage to paddy leaves and stems caused by various pests. Crops have dried up in several areas, with infestations of stem borers, leaf folders, and rice hispa being the most common. Despite efforts to control the outbreak, farmers said their attempts have yielded no results.

Local cultivators like Ratra Pradhan and Ajit Bastia expressed frustration over the lack of field visits by agricultural officers. “Even at the panchayat level, we rarely see any officials. We are left to deal with this crisis alone,” said one farmer. Lalit Sahu, the Block Agriculture Officer of Kantamal, acknowledged the issue and stated that his team is investigating the situation on the ground.

Similar Crisis in Balangir

The Patnagarh region of Balangir district is witnessing similar challenges. Farmers from various panchayats complained that pests like the muddy grub and stem borers have severely affected their standing crops. Despite using pesticides, the damage continues unabated.

Farmers such as Shankar Raut and Chintamani Raut from Saramuhan village lamented the absence of timely advice and field inspections. Promod Kumar Behera, the Agriculture Officer of Patnagarh, confirmed receiving complaints and assured that steps are being taken to assess the damage.

Economic Pressure Mounts

Many farmers, who have taken loans or leased land for cultivation, now face financial uncertainty. With crop losses mounting, they worry about repaying debts and supporting their families.
