Bhubaneswar, May 22: The Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar on Friday arrested a man for allegedly impersonating an officer of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and threatening police personnel and influential individuals.
According to a source, the accused used to move around in a vehicle fitted with a red beacon light and allegedly blackmailed prominent persons by introducing himself as an NIA officer. He is also accused of extortion and intimidating government officials.
Police said the accused had allegedly used his girlfriend to file a false rape complaint against a man at Kharvel Nagar police station. However, during investigation, police found the allegation to be fabricated and later settled the matter.
Subsequently, the accused reportedly entered Kharvel Nagar police station, identified himself as an NIA officer and allegedly threatened police personnel. He allegedly created panic inside the police station for over an hour.
Suspicion arose after police verified his identity card and contacted the NIA office in Bhubaneswar, which confirmed that he was not associated with the agency.
Police later tracked down and arrested the accused. Further investigation is underway to ascertain his criminal antecedents and whether he had duped or threatened more people using the fake identity.
Two Brown Sugar Peddlers Arrested
In another crackdown, the Special Crime Unit arrested two alleged drug peddlers from the Nayapalli area in Bhubaneswar while they were reportedly attempting to sell brown sugar.
The accused were identified as Fakruddin and Badshah, both residents of Bhadrak district.

Police seized around 230 grams of brown sugar and a vehicle from their possession. During interrogation, investigators reportedly found links to a narcotics network operating from Jharkhand.
Police sources said multiple criminal cases are already pending against Fakruddin at different police stations in Bhadrak district.
Further investigation is underway to trace the wider drug supply network and identify other persons involved in the racket.
