Ex-MP Rabindra Jena Quits BJD; His wife Subasini’s Rajya Sabha Stand Remains Unclear

Key Points
Bhubaneswar, Mar 10: In a major jolt to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), former Balasore MP Rabindra Kumar Jena resigned from the Naveen Patnaik-led party, citing personal reasons. His decision has stirred political discussions in Odisha, particularly as his wife, Subasini Jena, a sitting MLA, has yet to clarify her position in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
In his resignation letter to party president Naveen Patnaik,
Jena said he was stepping down due to personal causes and circumstances. Once
considered a strong BJD leader in Balasore, he was elected to the 16th Lok
Sabha in 2014 but lost to BJP’s Pratap Sarangi in 2019. His exit marks a
significant development in the party’s local leadership dynamics.

Attention has now shifted to Subasini Jena, who represents the Basta constituency in Balasore district. Elected in the 2024 Assembly polls, she has not yet revealed her stand in the Rajya Sabha elections, where a BJD-backed candidate is contesting. Speaking to the media, she said she would take a decision “at the right time,” adding to speculation about her stance.

✨Political observers note that her silence has created suspense within the party. As a first-time legislator, her decision could influence the internal balance of the BJD and its strength in the Rajya Sabha.
Jena’s resignation is being seen as a setback for the BJD in Balasore, where he had built a strong base during his tenure as MP. The uncertainty surrounding Subasini Jena’s position adds another layer of complexity, with her choice likely to be closely watched both within the party and outside.
The twin developments underline the shifting political currents in Odisha, as the BJD prepares for crucial parliamentary and assembly battles ahead.
