Cuttack, Jan 19: Noted psychiatrist Professor Dr. Gopal Chandra Kar passed away at his residence at Purighat at 10 am today. He was 80.


Dr Kar served as Director of Health and Training (DMET) under the Odisha Government. He did many developmental works as the Principal and HOD of the Department of Psychiatry at Shriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College and Hospital.


He is an eminent psychiatrist of India and a writer, lawyer, eloquent, politician, prominent Rotarian, life member of Cuttack Club and beloved physician of Odisha. Professor Dr Kar was born on January 18, 1946. He passed out from Ravenshaw Collegiate School in 1962.

Later, he obtained his medical degree from Sriramchandra Bhanj Medical College (1968) and Psychiatry from Prince of Wales Medical College, Patna, after obtaining first rank in graduation from Madhusudan Law College.


As a first Odia, he was the president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). He received many awards for social welfare and various services. In 1998, he was awarded the Dr. Harekrishna Mahatab Bishub Award for his social service. India's highest honor in the field of medicine, DLN Pulpitrao Award and AP Burma Airation Award were received by him.
