Berhampur, Dec 8: In a joint operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Berhampur Government Railway Police (GRP) foiled a major ganja smuggling attempt on Monday at Berhampur Railway Station, arresting two traffickers from Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

During routine checking, the teams intercepted two suspicious passengers — Ali Hossain and Roni Sheikh — who were carrying unusually heavy backpacks and multiple plastic cricket bats. Their behaviour raised doubts, prompting officers to conduct a detailed inspection in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses.

On breaking open the cricket bats and scanning the luggage, police discovered 17.5 kg of ganja cleverly concealed inside 23 backpacks and 10 hollow plastic cricket bats. The contraband was immediately seized.

Both accused have been arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, and samples of the seized material have been collected for forensic examination.

Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband, the smuggling network involved, and the intended recipients of the narcotics.

This marks an increase from 1,642 cases in 2022 and 1,179 cases in 2021.
