Drivers’ Strike Enters Day 4 In Odisha, Public Suffer

Key Points

Odisha’s drivers' strike enters fourth day, crippling transport services.

Internal divisions emerge as bus owners and cab unions resume operations.

Bhubaneswar, July 11: The statewide drivers’ strike in Odisha entered its fourth day on Friday, causing widespread disruption to public transport and sparking internal divisions within the Odisha Drivers’ Mahasangha.

While commuters across the state continue to suffer due to halted bus services, cracks have emerged in the protest movement, with several driver groups and private bus associations distancing themselves from the strike.

At Cuttack’s Netaji Bus Terminal, most buses remained off the roads, leaving long-distance travelers stranded. Frustration grew as buses were reportedly operated to ferry attendees to a Congress rally in Bhubaneswar, despite the ongoing strike. This selective operation triggered public outrage and raised questions about political motivations behind the protest.

The Cuttack Private Bus Owners’ Association and local drivers resumed services, demanding government protection and condemning the politicization of the strike. “We are ready to operate buses if the government ensures safety. Action must be taken against those using the strike for political gain,” said Kishore Chandra Biswal, Vice President of the association.

In southern areas like Gajapati and Berhampur, buses resumed partial operations, while Bhubaneswar’s online cab association announced its withdrawal from the protest, pledging to resume services from July 12.

Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena expressed disappointment over the continuation of the strike despite successful negotiations. He stated that over 35 driver unions are cooperating with the government and warned of strict action against those attacking drivers who choose to work. “Innocent drivers must not be misled by union leaders,” he added.

The strike, initially focused on welfare demands, now faces scrutiny for its political undertones, especially after the temporary suspension to accommodate a Congress rally in Bhubaneswar.
