Bhubaneswar, Nov 28: Odisha -- known for its temples, festivals, and food -- also hides spine-chilling locations steeped in paranormal lore. From the cursed Mangalajodi tree to the tortured echoes of Jatan Nagar Palace, these sites blur the line between history and horror.

Whether you're a thrill-seeker or a sceptic, these haunted destinations promise chills and a glimpse into Odisha’s darker, mysterious side.

Mangalajodi tree

The "Mangalajodi tree" is a legend about a haunted tree in the village of Mangalajodi, Khordha, Odisha, believed to be inhabited by an angry spirit. Locals report paranormal activity and claim it's the site of deaths, especially before the Dussehra festival, which led to the tree being cut down in the past.

As per the locals, there is an angry female spirit that dwells inside the tree where several deaths have occurred before the festival of Dussehra. And the locals also experienced ghostly and haunted voices during night hours, and reported unexplained deaths that occurred when they touched the tree. They also warned the travellers from staying too long near the tree.

Jatan Nagar Palace

The 100-room palace was built by Prince Narasingh Pratap Deb, who forced and tortured his labourers there, as per some locals. According to some beliefs, many of the labourers even died during the construction, and their spirits live within the walls of the palace. Travellers and locals have claimed to frequently hear screams of haunted apparitions that appear inside the broken window.

While the historical architecture attracts the visitors, the ruined environment feels gloomy to some visitors. The building is in a state of despair and has now been perceived as one of the most haunted places in India.

Unidentified creepy voices, with ghastly appearances, make the road the scariest location of all.
Locals prefer to stay away from isolated areas at night and warn visitors to remain alert during their journey.

Balasore Guest House

As per belief, a guest house in Balasore continues to haunt residents of Odisha because of the sudden and unexpected death of one of its previous occupants. Visitors and the employees have claimed to notice the sound of gentle footsteps and the shadow in the corridors and mirrors. During the day, people can experience the historical appeal of the place, yet during the night, the atmosphere feels eerie.
