Argus News - Diwali Blooms Bring Prosperity To Sambalpur’s Floriculturists

Sambalpur, Oct 20: Floriculturists in Odisha’s Sambalpur district have reaped a vibrant harvest this Diwali, turning festive demand into financial success through large-scale marigold cultivation.

Sabuj Sanatan Initiative

Under the Sabuj Sanatan Palli initiative, farmers from villages including Ghenupali, Nuabarangamal, Nuatihura, and Jayantpur sold over 5.5 tonnes of marigold flowers during the Diwali festival this year.

Market expansion

The flowers, sold at rates ranging from Rs150 to Rs 220 per kilogram, generated a total income of Rs 8.25 lakh. The produce was supplied not only across western Odisha but also to neighboring states like Chhattisgarh, reflecting the expanding market reach of local floriculture.

NBRI’s Support

Earlier this year, the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) distributed eight lakh high-quality marigold saplings to farmers under the Sabuj Sanatan Palli programme. Cultivation was carried out across 100 acres, significantly boosting flower production and rural income.

Dharmendra Pradhan’s Encouragement

Sambalpur MP and Union Edcation Minister Dharmendra Pradhan visited the region on April 14 and planted American Eustoma flower saplings, encouraging diversification in floriculture. He praised the farmers’ efforts and assured continued government support, including improved market access.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Project coordinator Babulal Suna and managing director Manabodh Barik credited the success to strategic planning, community collaboration, and institutional backing. The region’s farmers have previously exported indigenous mangoes, showcasing their growing entrepreneurial spirit.

With Diwali blossoms bringing both color and capital, Sambalpur’s floriculturists are blooming into a new era of rural prosperity.
