Dhenkanal, Dec 6: A woman died by suicide on Saturday morning, with her family alleging that she took the extreme step after failing to get justice in a rape case filed a week earlier in Dhenkanal district, a source said.
The husband of the deceased claimed that a relative, identified as Tuku Das, allegedly entered their house and raped her on the night of November 30 when she was alone.
According to the complaint, the woman's husband had gone to a relative’s wedding that night, leaving his wife at home. Finding her alone, the accused allegedly cut off the CCTV connection of the house and committed the crime.
The victim's husband said, “On November 30, I had gone to attend a wedding ceremony. It was around 10 pm when my wife went outside her bedroom to attend nature's call. However, at that very moment, the CCTV connection was cut off by Tuku Das, son of Kabi Das. Afterwards, Tuku got hold of my wife from behind and raped her. Initially, she did not disclose the incident out of trauma, but later told me. Afterwards, I filed an FIR at Dhenkanal Sadar Police Station on December 1.”
He further alleged that the accused and his family “continued to harass and intimidate them” after the FIR was lodged. “I dropped my wife at my in-laws’ house out of fear, but brought her back on December 5,” he said.
On Saturday morning, when he stepped out of the house, the victim allegedly locked herself inside. “When she did not open the door even after repeated knocking, we broke it open. Upon entering the room, we found her hanging from the ceiling fan,” he said.
Family members rushed her to the district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A purported suicide note was recovered from the room, containing the name of a youth.
In the letter, it is written in Odia that "Only Tuku is responsible for my death and no one else."
The husband has demanded strict action against the accused and alleged that a lack of timely police response pushed his wife into distress.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, and further investigation is underway.
