Puri, Jun 21: A non-Odia devotee was apprehended on Friday for allegedly attempting to take photographs inside the sacred premises of the Shree Jagannath Temple, violating the long-standing ban on mobile phones and photography within the temple complex.

According to temple security personnel and police, the devotee entered the temple with a mobile phone equipped with a camera and was caught red-handed while trying to capture images. The incident occurred near the sanctum area, where photography is strictly prohibited to preserve the sanctity of the 12th-century shrine.

Upon being confronted by the Jagannath Temple Police (JTP) and local police, the individual reportedly resisted handing over the mobile phone and engaged in verbal abuse and unruly behaviour. He was immediately detained and taken to Singhadwara Police Station for questioning.

Even at the police station, the individual allegedly continued to display defiance, openly declaring his intent to re-enter the temple with a mobile phone in the future. Authorities are now investigating the motive behind the breach and whether any photos were shared or uploaded online.

The Puri Police have reiterated that mobile phones, cameras, and electronic gadgets are strictly banned inside the temple premises. Violators are subject to legal action under applicable laws. This incident follows a series of similar breaches in recent months, prompting the temple administration to tighten security and surveillance measures.
