Bhubaneswar, May 29: A deep depression has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast, and is expected to intensify further before making landfall.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is moving northward and is likely to cross the coasts between Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Khepupara (Bangladesh) by this afternoon.
The depression, which developed from a low-pressure system, has triggered heavy rainfall and strong winds across coastal regions. The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for multiple districts in West Bengal and Odisha, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.
Impact on Coastal Regions
Odisha: Coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Mayurbhanj may witness moderate to heavy rainfall.
West Bengal: Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Burdwan, East Midnapore, Nadia, and Murshidabad are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Warnings & Precautions
The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal, as sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to take necessary precautions against waterlogging and possible flooding.
