  • Built with mud walls and Sambalpuri designs, these cottages offer modern amenities, authentic Odia meals, and immersive forest experiences, making it a unique destination for nature lovers and cultural explorers.

Sambalpur, Dec 1: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Odisha, homestay facilities have been launched in Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary to promote eco-tourism and rural livelihood. Starting November 25, five homestays have been opened in Dhodrokusum village, offering tourists a unique opportunity to experience forest and village life.

The homestays, built with mud walls, cow dung plaster, and thatched roofs, combine traditional aesthetics with modern amenities. Each unit is equipped with sanitary facilities and decorated with Sambalpuri designs. Visitors can enjoy evenings on traditional cots placed at the doorsteps and relish meals cooked on wooden stoves, served in authentic Odia style.

Three local women, Lakshmi Guru, Revati, and Sujata Bhoi are managing the homestays, which together offer five rooms. Forest Officer (DFO) Anshupragya Dash of Hirakud said the project was developed in collaboration with villagers to create sustainable livelihood opportunities. “This initiative not only supports conservation but also empowers local women through self-employment,” she noted.

Dhodrokusum has also been declared a plastic-free village, adding to its eco-friendly appeal. While five homestays are operational in the first phase, the DFO confirmed that ten more will be added soon to meet growing demand.
