Key Points

Japan's Ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi, relished Odisha’s Dalma during his Sambalpur visit, calling it delicious and a reflection of the state’s rich culinary heritage.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 27: Odisha’s rich culinary heritage received international recognition when Japan’s Ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi, expressed his admiration for the state’s traditional cuisine during his recent visit. The envoy, who was in Sambalpur to attend the unveiling of a joint venture between JSW Steel and JFE Steel Corporation, took time to enjoy a traditional Odia meal featuring rice and Dalma - a signature dish made with lentils and vegetables.

Sharing his experience on social media platform X, Ambassador Ono wrote that he “enjoyed Dalma in Odisha” and described it as “delicious” and a “wonderful reflection of Odisha’s rich culinary culture.” His post, accompanied by photos, quickly drew attention online, with many Odias expressing pride in their traditional food being appreciated at an international level.

Dalma, a wholesome dish combining lentils, seasonal vegetables, and mild spices, is considered a staple in Odia households and is often served during festivals and family gatherings. Its simple yet nutritious preparation has made it a cultural symbol of Odisha’s food traditions. The ambassador’s praise highlights how local cuisine can serve as a bridge of cultural diplomacy, showcasing the state’s identity beyond its borders.

During his Odisha visit, Ono Keiichi attended the launch of JSW JFE Steel Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between JSW Steel and Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation. The project aims to strengthen industrial cooperation and integrated steel operations in Sambalpur. While the event was primarily focused on economic collaboration, the ambassador’s culinary appreciation added a cultural dimension to his trip, reinforcing the importance of food in fostering goodwill and mutual respect.

Local residents and food enthusiasts have welcomed the ambassador’s remarks, noting that Odisha’s cuisine often remains underrepresented compared to other Indian states. His endorsement is seen as a boost to the state’s culinary tourism potential, encouraging visitors to explore authentic Odia dishes like Dalma, Pakhala, and Rasabali.
