Consumers in Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj, staged protests over non-availability of domestic gas cylinders, alleging diversion to hotels despite sufficient stock.
Rairangpur/Mayurbhanj, May 8: A severe shortage of domestic LPG cylinders has triggered chaos and consumer protests in Rairangpur town of Mayurbhanj district. Long queues were seen outside the Ganesh Gas Agency, where hundreds of customers waited from morning till evening, only to return empty-handed.
Residents expressed frustration, alleging that despite adequate stock in the warehouse, domestic consumers were being denied cylinders. Instead, supplies were reportedly diverted to hotels and restaurants, leaving households struggling. The situation sparked visible anger among consumers, who gathered outside the agency to voice their grievances.
Eyewitnesses said the rush resembled a marketplace, with people anxiously waiting for hours. “We have been standing since morning, but cylinders are not being given to us,” complained Naika Majhi, one of the affected consumers. Another resident, Ashok Kumar Agrawala, echoed similar concerns, accusing the agency of ignoring household needs.

The crisis has led to growing demands for a second gas agency in Rairangpur to ease the burden on consumers. Locals told media representatives that the existing infrastructure is inadequate to meet the rising demand, especially when mismanagement and diversion of supplies are alleged.
Consumer protests highlight the larger issue of transparency in distribution. While agencies are expected to prioritize domestic users, reports of commercial diversion have raised questions about accountability. The shortage has also disrupted daily life, with families forced to seek alternative cooking arrangements.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but the unrest underscores the urgent need for corrective measures. Residents insist that unless a new agency is established and strict monitoring enforced, the problem will persist.
For now, Rairangpur’s gas consumers remain caught between long waits and unmet promises, demanding immediate government intervention.
