Bhubaneswar, Oct 27: A deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclone Montha, currently centred approximately 860 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 710 km southeast of Kakinada.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is moving west-northwestward at a speed of 10 kmph and is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28.
Named "Montha" by Thailand, meaning "fragrant
flower," the cyclone is forecast to bring heavy to extremely heavy
rainfall and strong winds to coastal regions of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Authorities have issued high alerts and are closely monitoring the storm’s
trajectory.

✨The IMD predicts landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28. Wind speeds could reach 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. Sea conditions are expected to be very rough, posing significant risks to fishermen and small vessels.
Disaster management teams have been mobilized, and evacuation plans are being prepared for vulnerable coastal areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid travel during the storm, and follow official advisories.
The next 48 hours are crucial as Cyclone Montha continues to
intensify. Coastal communities are urged to remain vigilant and take all
necessary precautions to ensure safety.
