Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: In a troubling case of cyber fraud, a foreign medical student studying in Bhubaneswar fell prey to an online scam while attempting to purchase a mobile phone.
The victim, a first-year student from South Sudan enrolled at a reputed medical college in the city, was duped of ₹23,000 by cyber criminals.
According to sources, the victim had tried to buy a mobile phone online when he was contacted by a fraudster posing as a seller. The scammer demanded advance payments under various pretexts and managed to siphon off ₹23,000 through multiple transactions.
The student, unaware of the deceptive tactics, complied with the requests, only to realize later that he had been conned.

Following the incident, he lodged a complaint with the Bhubaneswar Cyber Police Station. Acting swiftly, the police were able to recover ₹16,000 of the defrauded amount. Efforts are currently underway to retrieve the remaining ₹7,000.
The case highlights the growing threat of cybercrime targeting unsuspecting individuals, especially students and foreigners unfamiliar with local digital practices.
